A small and local grower of mushrooms
looking to expand into the field of exotic mushrooms. Mushrooms are an important commodity of food but also a source
of valuable bioactive metabolites. Commercial production of mushrooms has
focused on the field mushroom (Agarius Bisporus) grown typically on a manure
based compost. However much interest especially recently has been on the
production of exoctic mushrooms (Shiitake, oyster, ceps, beefsteak etc.) The
aim of the project is to help in the marketing and commercialisation of the
company, specifically focusing on the new inexpensive, sustainable substrates
for the mass production of these exotic mushrooms. The main substrate that we
looked at is the use of 100% broken basmati rice needed in the production
process when growing these exotic mushrooms.
Currently Myco solutions only produces 4
types of mushrooms that are typically grown and sold by many uk growers and
suppliers. The company has a project within the bio-sciences department of the
university which investigates and tests ways to grow exotic mushrooms in mass
for Myco solutions to aid with their differentiation business level strategy
that they wish to pursue.
